The House that Zoe Built

First off... someone should have reminded me that putting together a gingerbread house is no simple task.  There should be a warning on the box or something.  "Do not attempt to build this house unless you want to be highly agitated and aggravated.  Attempting to build this house WILL cause stress, tension, crying and cursing."

But, Zoe was beyond thrilled to put together and decorate her gingerbread house.  She was slightly upset when we found out the 2 roof pieces had cracked.  But I promised I could fix them and I let her eat a decoration gumball and all was fine.

With a little (LOT) of effort I was able to get that house together and standing up straight.  Zoe VERY patiently waited for the icing/glue to dry.

Even after the suggested 10-15 minutes of setting time (we waited 20 even) that house didn't want to stay up straight.  It kept drooping at the roof peak.  I ended up covered up to the wrists in paste, er, icing.  It is very hard not to lick your fingers when they are covered with what looks like yummy icing.  Let me tell you... that icing is not yummy.  But Zoe... she stayed smiley.

We did eventually get the house to stay together while we smooshed each piece of candy into place.  Putting those gumballs on top cause it to collapse more than once.  I warned Zoe multiple times that we might not end up with a house.  It might just be a mess.  But she kept smiling... and eventually we were done.

And we built that house.

Zoe LOVED it.  She was so excited to show that thing to every single person that walked into our door.  It sat there on our dining room table for a whole month.

And then... after Christmas and New Year's were all over... we enjoyed smashing that thing with a hammer.  (Honestly... that thing is lucky I didn't smash it while it was being built.  I see you laughing at me little gingerbread men.  You weren't laughing when I hit you with that hammer.)

You know what?  We'll probably do it again next year if Zoe asks.  As far as she's concerned it was a fabulous thing to do.  But next time?  Next time I'm building that house the day before so it REALLY has time to set and dry before the decorating begins.  Maybe that will help?  If not... we always have a hammer.

Love the pictures!
We did one last year and my OCD tendencies took over and I had to back away because Nicholas and Addison WERE NOT PLACING THE M&Ms correctly!
We didn't do one this year because of Nicholas' nut allergy but next year I'm making my own walls and roof and we'll do it again. Maybe even one for mommy and one for the kids! :)

Oh my do I know about OCD tendencies wanting to take over. It nearly killed me. I think it would definitely be a good idea to have one for each of the kids... and one for mommy.

This was the first year where all I had to do was build the house and then The Midge did everything else. The house ended up with a big gap where the roof peaked, so I told her just to stick a bunch of candy up there and nobody would notice. Thankfully it worked.!

It is a fun, inexpensive activity that keeps the kids occupied...

I'm hoping that next year I can just build it and Zoe will do everything else. Next year Ana will be involved though. That should be LOADS of fun.

And that is why DADDY always does the gingerbread house with the girls! :-) Zoe is so cute though - looking so proud.

You smashed the dang thing with a hammer?! That is awesome. I think gingerbread houses were designed by some evil genius to drive mommy's crazy. But, it's so worth it to see grins like that.

I think Nick might have an even harder time than I did. I could be wrong though. Next year might be his turn.

Yes... I real honest to goodness hammer. It would quite fit in the garbage can whole... so we set it angled in the can.... and then smashed it to smithereens. I think Zoe might have enjoyed that as much as she enjoyed building it.

I love it ,so cute but i could see where the trouble would come in.

Now do you actually eat it after all that time? Maybe next year will look for something like that to do with the girls

No... you don't eat it after all that time. Actually... the set we bought didn't really have anything that tasted very good when it was fresh. The icing tasted like slightly sweet paste... and the gingerbread was like a rock. All specifically meant for building and decorating.

It might actually be more fun next year to actually bake the gingerbread for the house... and use tasty decorations... and then eat it for dessert on Christmas.
